Brought Out by Patient Telescopes
—a hymn about Creation

Text:

Brought out by patient telescopes,
uncounted, distant stars are found,
while, clarified in microscopes,
the watchworks of our cells astound.
The breadth, the detail, that we see
prove more than skill and artistry—
Such pow'r, Creator, we can't grasp...
or that you'd hear what we would ask.

Beside your power, tenderness!
No sparrow falls that you don't know!
We love things grand and splendorous;
you cherish small ones, even so.
We picture creatures you have made—
each one unique! They're Love displayed!
We mark this, too, Good God: your plans
to care for all with open hand.

Through heav'ns or earth, who's like you, God?
Your Son and Spirit show us much:
how love from you seeks on and on
beyond what we would call "enough."
Such pow'r and love as you've combined
expands our hearts, breaks open minds....
Creator, still we see your ways             Creative Trinity, your ways,
providing us new cause for praise.        ongoing, give new cause for praise.

This hymn text praises God for both the power and love that we see in Creation—and afterwards! Specific Bible references include Genesis 1, Psalm 8, Psalm 19:1-4, Psalm 139:13-14, Psalm 104:24-28, Matthew 10:29-31, and Luke 15.

Musical Details

This text is Long Meter Doubled, 8 8 8 8 D. Two tunes that work well are referenced above. SWEET HOUR by William B. Bradley (1816-1868) often has the lyric "Sweet hour of prayer, sweet hour of prayer" and is in public domain, but we're offering a specially designed piano accompaniment.

The second suggestion is the tune from "Lamb of God" (or, "Your Only Son") by Twila Paris (1958- ). It is ©1985 Straightway Music/Mountain Spring Music, and might be found in your hymnbooks or can be bought. The link on this page will remind you of the melody, but you may need to license the tune's use.
